JOB TITLE: Planner

JOB DESCRIPTION: Under the general supervision of the Senior Planner and Executive Director, the Planner performs professional work in plan preparation, in the development and recommendation of project planning standards and in the completion of planning projects and programs.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: Performs independent work in the development of analyses and technique and procedure recommendation regarding planning activities; prepares or assembles maps using GIS software, prepares narrative statements, statistical and financial data required for planning applications and reports; conducts research and studies towards the development of planning programs and projects covering various activities such as land use, zoning and subdivision regulations and plans, including compliance issues, and prepares appropriate recommendations; may have supervisory responsibility over junior employees; discusses and advises the public with respect to projects, plans and reports; develops database management systems; prepares regional plans and sub-area master plans as assigned; conducts housing related studies; develops all hazard mitigation and emergency operations plans; and performs other related work as may be required.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Graduation from a recognized college or university with a Master’s degree in Regional, City, or Urban Planning or a related field, supplemented by one to three years of professional planning experience in a recognized planning office; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS: Considerable knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of regional planning; considerable knowledge of the techniques of planning research and ability to apply them to the general and specific urban and rural planning studies and projects; ability to formulate effective plans for regional development and conservation; extensive knowledge of and experience with GIS software such as ArcView GIS; ability to interpret planning requirements and objectives to interested groups, officials, other agencies and the general public in a clear and concise manner; must have excellent verbal and writing capabilities; and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with funding agencies, groups interesting in planning, public officials, other employees, and the general public.

SALARY: $42,000 yearly plus health and retirement benefits.
