The Small Business Liability Relief and Brownfields Revitalization
Act of 2002 defines a ‘brownfields site’ as “real property,
the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a
hazardous waste substance, pollutant, or contaminant.”

Rebuilding Southern New Hampshire
Through Brownfields Investment

SNHPC recently received for the first time a grant from U.S. EPA New England to be used to assess known and suspected Petroleum Contaminated Brownfield sites with in the region’s 13 municipalities. An advisory committee has been formed to help select sites for determining the extent of petroleum contamination. Locating and assessing areas of possible contamination is the primary step toward re-use of abandoned or under-used brownfields.

SNHPC has recently hired the environmental and engineering consulting firm of Loureiro Engineering Associates, Inc. in Merrimack, NH for program implementation, community outreach, site identification, ranking and selection, phase I/phase II assessments and final reporting. At the April 22, 2008 Advisory Committee meeting, members of the consulting firm will be present to introduce themselves and to begin to outline the work program and schedule.
